The H-1B Visa is one of only two visas that permits a foreign physician to work in the United States in a position that primarily involves direct patient care. To qualify for an H-1B visa a foreign physician must have:
- A full-time offer of employment from a U.S. employer
- A degree from a medical school in the United States or a foreign country
- A medical license in the state of intended employment
- Completed the Federation Licensing Examination (FLEX) or the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Parts I, II & III and establish competency in written and oral English
The H-1B visa is an option that should always be considered. Unlike the J-1 visa, there is no two-year foreign residence requirement attached to the H-1B visa and it will last for a maximum duration of six years.
