The visitor visa is a nonimmigrant visa for persons coming to the United States temporarily for business (B-1) or for pleasure or medical treatment (B-2).
Applicants for visitor visas must demonstrate that:
- The purpose of their trip is to enter the U.S. for business, pleasure, or medical treatment;
- They plan to remain for a specific, limited period; and
- They have a residence outside the U.S. as well as other binding ties which will insure their return abroad at the end of the visit.
Applicants should be aware that issuance of a visa from a U.S. Embassy does not guarantee entry into the United States. Immigration authorities at the port-of-entry have the authority to deny admission, and determine the period for which the visitor is authorized to remain in the United States. At the time of admission most visitors are issued a Form I-94 that notes the length of time the visitor is permitted to remain in the country.
Canadian citizens are visa exempt in the visitor category
and can apply for admission in visitor status directly at a port of entry to
the US. There are also many countries
that are part of the ESTA program that are permitted entry in visitor status
without a formal visa application for up to 90 days with certain
restrictions. Those countries are:
